Cold Weather Weekend Backpacking Checklist

Image

Here’s a quick n dirty boy scout troop leader’s checklist for taking a cold weather 2-3 day backpacking trip. It does a good job of explaining layering, however there are a few things I’d tweak here and there. The biggest thing that every guide you’ll find emphasizes is the need to stay dry. If you are loaded down with warm gear while hiking, you will  quickly overheat and sweat, which can quickly lead to hypothermia in even cool [not freezing] conditions. Overall it is a pretty good list to go by and start to collect gear if your thinking of taking a trip in the next few chilly months!

And here’s a layer by layer breakdown from Backpacker Magazine on dressing in the cold weather.
